Basically, it is a detailed inspection of a Yacht or Small Watercraft, done by a qualified, diligent, intelligent and honest surveyor, for the purpose of determining its current condition and overall fitness on the day of the inspection. In particular, to determine if the vessel is safe to use in conditions for which it was designed, and what maintenance and repairs are required, or are likely to be required in the near future. A marine survey also includes a professional appraisal using both book values and also actual vessel comparable sales.
Some buyers are not experienced enough, or mechanically inclined to a point where they can make an adequate evaluation on their own. Even those who are qualified benefit immensely from a outside professional, educated and unbiased inspection.
If you’re intending to invest in a purchase of a boat or yacht, a marine survey may be the least expensive and most valuable tool you can have to assist you in making the right purchase. Certain types and makes of vessels and pleasure boats can have recurring problems and a good marine surveyor will be familiar with these problems. They will advise you on the suitability of your intended purchase, current market value, its equipment, and particularly in relation to how and where you will be using it. Clients are also finding that insurance companies and financial lenders are requiring a survey to obtain their services.
It is important to find a surveyor with the appropriate background, qualifications, and education, Ex: Chapmans School of Seamanship. Check for memberships with organizations such as, American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC), BoatUS, and Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors (SAMS).
We do not evaluate the internal mechanical parts of the engines and transmissions. An inspection/evaluation will be conducted on the operation and condition of the external parts of the engines/transmissions. We also offer Laboratory Fluid Analysis service for all mechanical systems such as main engines, transmissions, and generator engines. This is an important option to consider. It is recommended to hire a Mechanical/Engine Surveyor who is educated and trained on the type of engines that are in the vessel. They can evaluate the internal workings of the engines and transmissions. Make sure to specify to them if it is a diesel engine application. At times we can assist in obtaining a Mechanical/Engine Surveyor.
The Boat Yard/Marina can schedule your haul-out if being conducted (we can help/accomplish if needed) .Your preparation is important to ensure the survey is smooth, successful, and on the day/time scheduled. Be considerate of the fact, when a surveyor commits to a date and time for a survey, they are turning down other requests for surveys for that specific date and time. Some items you will have to coordinate with agent or owner. When scheduling a survey if applicable, make sure:
Depends on the services conducted, size, complexity of the vessel and systems. A standard boat survey can take anywhere from a few hours to a full day.
We accept various forms of payment. Cash is preferred, if possible. If other forms are needed, we accept Check, Zelle, Venmo, and PayPal (PayPal charges fees to you for service). We also accept credit cards, there will a 3% fee applied to cost of survey.
Normally the buyer is responsible for any payment associated with the survey process. This also includes payment for the Haul Out (paid separately to marina/boat yard directly). Unless of course, other arrangements are negotiated with owner or broker. All payments are due at time of services.
